14 people killed in freak accident involving truck and camel along Lodwar-Kakuma Road

Fourteen people have died in a freak road accident involving a camel and truck along the Lodwar-Kakuma Road in Turkana County.
The accident happened around 10pm at Kakwamunyen area, says a police report seen by TV47 DIGITAL.
"It happened that the motor vehicle (an Isuzu NPR lorry Reg no. KCH 632B) was being driven towards Kakuma general direction and upon reaching at the location of the accident there was a camel that was crossing the road from left to right," says the report from Lodwar Police Station.
The lorry was heavily loaded with assorted consumer goods and 26 passengers. According to the police report, the driver identified as David Ekitela Etire, 33, swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the camel.
"Due to the heavy weight of the vehicle from the goods in it and the passengers, he then lost control of the vehicle and it overturned and landed in a culvert on the right side of the road," adds the police report.
The dead are eight women, three men and three children. Several others were seriously injured in the accident that also extensive damaged the truck.
The injured were rushed to Lodwar County and Referral Hospital for treatment while the dead bodies were taken to the facility's mortuary.
The truck was towed to Lodwar Police Station as investigations continue.
