Maseno University student shot dead during Kisumu Azimio protests

A third-year student of Maseno University was on Monday, March 20 evening shot dead by police during the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition anti-government protests.

A police report says that William Nyange was among a group of violent protesters - who included students - who had invaded Sairam Supermarket in Maseno town and other business premises along the Kisumu-Busia Highway.

The report further says that the protesters went on to invade Maseno Police line, overpowering the police who had run out of teargas canisters, prompting them to use live bullets to disperse them.

Nyange was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead on arrival at Coptic Hospital.

Six officers injured

It is reported that at least six police officers were injured in the incident that saw the protesters barricade the  busy highway.

"The students lit bonfires and barricaded Kisumu-Busia road using stones..," the police report says... They [students] overpowered the officers who were manning the station. The officers had run out of teargas canisters," the report says.
