Kilifi County wants Nema to ban pads and diapers

A Kilifi County official wants the national environmental authority to ban diapers and pads as they contribute to pollution.

Mariam Jenneby, the Kilifi executive member for environment and natural resources, says plastic products dumped after use do not compose, and a ban on such will help create a better environment.

“I urge the government and Nema (National Environment Management Authority) to keep a total ban on any plastic products, they have created a hazardous environment in our community," Jenneby said in Kanamai area during the world combat desertification day.

" Today we have cleaned our town and planted some trees. However, when you look at the dumpsite, most of those plastics being dumped are the diapers, Nema should ban them,” added Jenneby.

She said her department will put measures to curb illegal dumping in the county.

“We have a bill at the county assembly which we hope will become a law, and all those found dumping garbage illegally will be arrested and fined not less than Sh15,000,” she revealed.

Zainab Mohammed, an officer at the department of environment, lauded Jennebys’ statement.

“We need to do away with products made from or of plastics: it's endangering our environment. To our mothers who are used to diapers, kindly let’s go back to analogue system of using napkins for our kids," said Zainab.
