Nominated MP Irene Mayaka champions Bill to criminalize match-fixing

Nominated Member of Parliament Irene Mayaka appeared before the Parliamentary Sports Committee to present and advocate for the Proposed Sports Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The crucial legislation seeks to criminalize match-fixing and other forms of sports manipulation, a move she describes as vital for safeguarding the integrity of Kenyan sports.

During the bill’s pre-publication scrutiny, Mayaka underscored the urgent necessity of the proposed law. “Earlier today, I was honored to appear before the Parliamentary Sports Committee to defend my proposed legislation, which seeks to criminalize sports manipulation, including match-fixing,” she stated.

Mayaka characterized the bill as a critical stride towards rebuilding public trust in sports and protecting athletes from exploitation. “This progressive legislation marks a crucial step in safeguarding the integrity of sports in Kenya. Match-fixing erodes trust, exploits athletes, and threatens the credibility of our leagues,” she emphasized.

The MP extended her gratitude to the committee for fostering open dialogue and stressed the importance of continued collaboration to enhance governance within the sports sector.
