The North Eastern Region Senior Schools Term One Championship 2026 concluded in Wajir County after days of intense competition that brought together teams from across the region.
The event turned Wajir Town into a hub of activity, with students displaying skill, teamwork, and resilience in various disciplines.
Wajir County CDE Dr Qoriyow hailed the championship as a vital platform for nurturing talent among learners.
He emphasized that co-curricular activities are key to developing disciplined and well-rounded students. He also noted that the Siyad Foundation supported the event, helping ensure the tournament ran smoothly and participants had the necessary resources.
The colourful closing ceremony was held at Wajir Girls Secondary School, drawing officials, participants, and members of the public.





Winners were awarded trophies in recognition of their outstanding performances, while organisers praised the discipline and teamwork demonstrated throughout the tournament.
In basketball, Sambunley Boys from Wajir County claimed the boys’ title, while Takaba Girls from Mandera County emerged champions in the girls’ category.
In handball, Sheikh Ali High School from Mandera County won the boys’ championship, and Wajir Girls Secondary School secured victory in the girls’ category.
The athletics events saw Wajir County dominate the boys’ competitions, while Garissa County excelled in the girls’ events.
In cross country, Mandera County led in the boys’ races, and Garissa County took top honours in the girls’ category, showcasing the region’s depth of talent.
CEO and Founder of Siyad Foundation Haji Siyad said the foundation’s support was aimed at empowering young people through sports and education.
He noted that providing equipment and uniforms for participating teams helps unlock potential and encourages excellence among students.
Dr Qoriyow urged schools to invest more in sports development, saying structured programs are essential in identifying and nurturing talent Madam Rahma Hassan, Wajir Girls Secondary School Principal, praised students for their discipline during the games and encouraged them to balance academics with co-curricular activities.
Selected teams are now expected to represent the North Eastern Region at national competitions in Kisumu County.
