North Korea’s president Kim Jong Un’s influential sister Kim Yo-jong has stated they won’t have dialogues with South Korea despite South Korea’s new president, Lee Jae-myung trying to improve relations between them on July 27, 2025.
Kim Yo-jong reaffirmed in a statement shared by Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) that they ‘have no interest in talks with President Lee Jae-myung’s government.
“We clarify once again the official stance that no matter what policy is adopted and whatever proposal is made in Seoul, we have no interest in it and there is neither a reason to meet nor an issue to be discussed with the ROK,” the statement read.
This comes after President Lee Jae-myung since taking office in June eased tensions with North Korea by ending loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts along the border.
These broadcasts were a response to North Korea sending trash-filled balloons into the South. In return, the North had blasted harsh sounds like sirens and scraping metal across the border.
However, Kim dismissed South Korea’s recent efforts to ease calling them ‘not worthy of appreciation.’
“If South Korea expects to reverse all the consequences of (its actions) with a few sentimental words, there could be no greater miscalculation than that,” she stated.
Kim Yo-jong also firmly dismissed any hope for policy discussions talks with South Korea.
“We again make clear the official position that whatever policy is established in Seoul or proposal is made, we are not interested, and we will not be sitting down with South Korea and there is nothing to discuss,” she declared.
The sister of North Korea’s president also mentioned South Korea’s ‘blind trust’ on the U.S. combined with hostility for North Korea shows that the current government is just the same as previous ones.
Kim Yo-jong also implied that North Korea is more interested in Russia and doesn’t want to hold talks with Seoul or Washington any time soon.
President Lee Jae-myung issued a call for trust rebuilding between the nations on Monday, July 28, 2025, following the KCNA statement.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry also stated that Kim Yo-jong’s statements demonstrate the profound distrust that years of hostile interactions have produced.
The spokesperson from the Ministry, Koo Byoung-sam also declared Seoul’s ongoing efforts to achieve reconciliation and cooperative relations with North Korea.
