A suspected gang leader was shot dead in the early hours of Saturday following a fierce gun battle with police officers in Igembe North, Meru County.
According to a statement shared by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on March 21, 2026, the incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. in Shauri Yako area, Linjoka sub-location, during a routine patrol by officers from Laare Police Station.
The officers reportedly encountered “a shadowy group of approximately five young men lurking with sinister intent.” Upon being challenged, the suspects allegedly opened fire.
“Upon lawful challenge, the suspects unleashed a hail of gunfire at the brave officers,” the DCI said, noting that no officer was injured during the confrontation.
Police returned fire, leading to an exchange that left one of the suspects dead, while four others escaped.
“In the intense exchange that followed, one suspect was fatally neutralized… while the remaining four fled into the darkness, still armed and dangerous,” the agency added.
Authorities identified the deceased as Mutembei Kola, whom investigators described as “the feared and notorious leader of a ruthless criminal gang” operating in the area.
At the scene, officers recovered a Beretta Gardone pistol loaded with three rounds of ammunition, along with a spent cartridge.
The body was moved to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
The DCI said a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects, warning that they remain a threat to the public.
“Investigations are in full swing and a massive manhunt is underway to hunt down the fleeing accomplices before they strike again,” the statement read.
The agency also praised the officers involved in the operation, reiterating its stance against crime.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations stands resolute: criminal elements will find no sanctuary,” the statement concluded.
