The National Police Service (NPS) has distanced itself from remarks made by a junior officer regarding the future recruitment of women into the Service, emphasizing that the comments were personal and not reflective of the government’s stance.
In a statement released on August 2, 2025 NPS noted that the officer’s remarks, made during the 23rd Jukwaa La Usalama Forum in Laikipia County, had suggested scaling down the intake of female recruits.
The event was attended by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, alongside other senior security officials.
“The NPS further emphasizes that the officer’s remarks were personal and do not reflect the official stance of the government,” the statement read.
At the same time, NPS reaffirmed its commitment to gender balance in line with the constitutional one-third gender rule.
“The NPS remains committed to achieving and upholding the constitutional one-third gender rule in national employment and representation,” it stated.
Police also highlighted the crucial role women officers continue to play, both locally and internationally, crediting their success to merit and professionalism.
“Notably, a significant number of women officers are serving internationally, an achievement attained through merit, dedication, and professional competence, not chance,” the statement added.
The NPS expressed appreciation for the contributions of both male and female officers who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of Kenyans, visitors, and investors in the country.
