NPS Dismisses Statement on Foreign Involvement in Protests as Fake

National Police Service (NPS) on Monday, July 7, 2025, dismissed a circulating press statement that claimed the service had raised alarm over the growing involvement of foreigners and undocumented immigrants in recent violent protests across Nairobi and other parts of the country.

In an official rebuttal, the NPS labeled the statement as fake, clarifying that it was not issued by the police spokesperson.

“This press statement circulating on social media, purporting to be issued by the Spokesperson of the National Police Service, is fake,” the service stated.

What the fake NPS statement said on Protests

The fabricated statement alleged that nationals from over eight countries—including neighboring Uganda, South Sudan, and Somalia—had been arrested for participating in acts of vandalism, looting, and the burning of police stations.

Additionally, it also claimed that the NPS, in collaboration with the Department of Immigration, had intensified operations targeting undocumented immigrants working in Kenya.

Consequently, the false release called on “patriotic Kenyans” to report illegal immigrants to the nearest police station for arrest and deportation.

Saba Saba Day Protest lockdown

These claims emerged in the aftermath of widespread unrest on June 25, during which at least eight police stations—including Juja, Villa, Molo, Ongata Rongai, Matuu, Mai Mahiu, and Ol Kalou—were either burned or vandalized.

Additionally, the statement was shared as major roads leading to Nairobi CBD were heavily barricaded restricting movement into the city.

However, different areas experienced demonstration in the wake of commemorating Saba Saba Day.

Despite lockdown on major roads heading into Nairobi CBD, the police have engaged in running battles with protesting Kenyans with scores losing their lives from fired police bullets.

The National Police Service is yet to release an authentic statement on lives lost from the alleged use of force by police officers on protestors on Saba Saba Day protest commemoration.
