Nyahururu leaders push for inclusion of intellectually disabled persons

Leaders from government, religious, and community organizations in Nyahururu have joined hands to advocate for the inclusion and support of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

During a community event held in the town, calls were made to raise awareness, promote early identification of children with such disabilities, and involve them meaningfully in societal development.

The event, highlighted by a 5-kilometer walk organized by L’Arche Kenya in partnership with other local groups, aimed to raise both awareness and funds in support of people living with intellectual disabilities.

Speaking during the event, Ms. Cecilia Ndegwa, Chairperson of the L’Arche Kenya Board, emphasized the importance of embracing people with intellectual disabilities and integrating them fully into the community.

Her sentiments were echoed by Nyandarua North Deputy County Commissioner Ms. Angeline Were, who urged families and the wider community to recognize the unique talents and potential of these individuals.

“These children have special gifts. They only need an enabling environment and a supportive community,” said Ms. Were.

Nyandarua Nominated MCA Joyce Munyua, who represents persons with disabilities at the county assembly, noted that one of the major challenges faced by intellectually disabled individuals is the lack of opportunities. She called on both the public and private sectors to involve them in community work and decision-making processes.

“Inclusion gives a sense of belonging,” said Munyua. “When we isolate them, we deny them a chance to grow and contribute meaningfully to society.”

The leaders expressed concern over the continued neglect and mistreatment of people with disabilities, despite the existence of legislation and advocacy efforts meant to protect their rights. They called for stricter implementation of disability laws and greater representation of persons with disabilities in leadership positions.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the role society must play in uplifting every member, regardless of their abilities, and reinforced the message that people with intellectual disabilities deserve dignity, support, and inclusion in all aspects of life.
