The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a high-level investigation into a deeply distressing incident where a woman suffered a miscarriage while in police custody at Rwanyambo Police Post in Nyandarua County.
In an immediate response, the officer in charge of the post has been interdicted.
The NPS, through its spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, announced on Thursday evening, June 12, that its Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) is jointly investigating the matter with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
“To ensure a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation, the officer in charge of Rwanyambo Police Post has been interdicted with immediate effect,” stated Muchiri Nyaga.
He acknowledged the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and affirmed the Service’s commitment to cooperate with the ongoing inquiry fully.
Nyaga reiterated the NPS’s dedication to its mandate: “The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to serving and protecting the public while upholding the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms.” He assured that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
Authorities did not immediately disclose details about the woman’s identity, the specific cause of the miscarriage, or the duration of her detention prior to the incident.
