Oburu Oginga commits ODM to Ruto alliance

Politics

ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has declared that the Orange party is fully committed to President William Ruto’s Broad-Based Government until the 2027 general election.

Speaking at a consultative rally in Kibra, Oburu dismissed internal dissent, signaling shifts in Kenya’s political landscape just three months after the death of his brother and longtime party icon, Raila Odinga.

The first major gathering in Kibra since Raila’s passing served as a symbolic bridge between the era of opposition and a future of cooperation.

“We are not guests; we are partners,” he asserted, confirming that the Kilifi Central Management Committee resolution to seek a formal pre-election coalition with Ruto’s UDA is now official party policy.

The absence of key figures like Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Godfrey Osotsi, and Babu Owino cast a long shadow.

They have remained vocal critics of the Ruto alliance, fearing it erodes ODM’s identity.

Oburu did not mince words, daring the rebels to “quit on their own” rather than waiting for expulsion, insisting the party must negotiate with UDA from a “position of strength.”

Beyond the rhetoric, Oburu’s speech was a strategic pivot. By starting the 2027 talks early, he aims to secure ODM’s share of the next government.

He punctuated the political messaging with a populist touch, pledging 3 million shillings to help Kibra residents whose homes were demolished earlier that morning.
