‘ODM not for sale’ – declares Nyando MP Jared Okello

Nyando Member of Parliament (MP) Jared Okello has dismissed claims that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party is being sold, insisting that the party remains firmly under the leadership of Dr. Oburu Odinga.

Speaking during a widows empowerment programme in Bondo, Okello said recent talk suggesting that certain individuals within ODM were negotiating with former President Uhuru Kenyatta to sell the party was misleading and unacceptable.

“ODM cannot and will never be a party on sale. We can only negotiate with other people as equal partners, and that does not amount to selling a political party,” Okello stated.

The legislator posed tough questions to those allegedly involved in the negotiations, asking who had given them the authority to conceive such an idea, how much they were selling the party for, and what deposit they had received. He challenged them to come out publicly and clarify their intentions.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthew Owili, and other ODM leaders emphasized that ODM has a capable leadership, pointing to Dr. Oburu Odinga as the party’s highest-ranking leader.

He urged members to rally behind Odinga, describing him as the crown bearer of the party following the passing of its founding figure.

Wandayi further noted that ODM is engaged in a broad-based arrangement with President William Ruto’s administration, though not yet a formal coalition. He explained that the party intends to negotiate for a greater stake in government ahead of the 2027 elections.

Dr. Oburu Odinga himself reaffirmed his position as party leader, dismissing any doubts about ODM’s direction. He said the party would continue to push for inclusion in government and ensure its supporters benefit from national programs.

The event also highlighted targeting vulnerable groups. Interior PS Raymond Omollo praised President Ruto’s administration for programs that provide widows with title deeds, healthcare access, and support for orphans. He noted that elderly citizens and persons with disabilities are now benefiting from monthly stipends of KSh 2,000.

“For the first time, we have a government that looks after all of us, and most importantly the most vulnerable amongst us,” Omollo said, urging residents to register for the programs.
