One dead, another seriously injured as gold mine collapses in Kakamega

One miner who was pulled out of the gold mine alive is receiving treatment at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital.

Grief has engulfed a village in Ikolomani Constituency, Kakamega County, after a miner was killed and another seriously injured when a gold mine collapsed on Wednesday, March 20 evening.

Confirming the incident, Lirhembe Assistant Chief Sylvester Mutoko says that the gold mine collapsed when the two miners were working on it, about 200ft under.

Moses Latiko, 25, lost his life as a result while 24-year-old Meshach Mavia was pulled out from the rubble by police officers and locals. He had serious injuries on the head, face and hands.

“He was rushed to Kakamega referral hospital where he was admitted in a serious condition,” a report, filed by Mutoko at Iguhu Police Post, reads in part.

The body of the deceased was moved to Kakamega morgue awaiting autopsy.
