One Kenyan police officer, who is part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti was killed as 8 others were injured in a road accident on Sunday August 31, 2025.
According to MSS Spokesperson Jack Ombaka, the incident occurred at around 5pm during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro vehicles, as one was towing the other when it developed mechanical problems.
“Eight MSS officers sustained injuries, three of the injured are in serious condition and require medical evacuation to the Dominican Republic for specialized treatment after initial care at the Aspen Level 2 Hospital at the LSA 2,” Ombaka noted in a statement.
In addition, the National Police Service (NPS) released a statement on Monday morning about the death of a Kenyan police officer serving in Haiti.
In a statement, NPS explained that the next of kin of the officer have been notified.
Reports indicate that on Sunday August 31, 2025, at approximately 1700 hours Haitian time (Monday, 1st September 2025, at 0200 hours Kenyan time), MSS officers were involved in a tragic road traffic accident on the Kenscoff-Pétion-Ville Road in the Pèlerin 9 area.
The incident occurred during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro vehicles. During the towing process, the unfortunate accident happened, which also claimed the lives of two civilians and injured eight other MSS officers.
Three of the injured are in a serious condition and are currently receiving medical care in hospital.
“NPS extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of the fallen officer and assures them of our unwavering support during this time of profound sorrow,” read part of NPS statement.
Meanwhile, the MSS, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is making arrangements to repatriate the officer’s body to Kenya and is ensuring the injured personnel continue to receive the best possible medical care.
The MSS Mission, led by Kenya, was deployed to Haiti over a year ago and the situation has however continued to deteriorate, with its capital Port-au-Prince, almost entirely under gang control.
Of the 2,500 police officers that the MMS had hoped to deploy to Haiti, only about 1,000 from six countries have been sent, including more than 700 from Kenya.
