Outrage in Turkey after Mosque is renamed to honor Victor Osimhen

A recent user edit on Google has stirred controversy in Turkey after a popular mosque was temporarily renamed after Galatasaray’s new star, Victor Osimhen.

The popular Bulut Mosque in Konya was listed online as “Victor Osimhen Mosque,” a change that has sparked outrage among local Muslim worshippers.

Osimhen, a Super Eagles forward and a fan favorite in Istanbul, is adored by Galatasaray fans following an impressive season-long loan that led to his permanent signing from Napoli.

His immense popularity was evident when he was greeted by a large crowd of supporters at the Atatürk International Airport on July 30.

While many have found ways to celebrate the striker, this particular tribute has been met with strong criticism.

Worshippers call renaming an insult

For many congregants of the Bulut Mosque, the renaming is seen as a sign of disrespect. Citing Osimhen’s Christian faith, worshippers believe the act is a mockery of their religion and a grave insult to their place of worship.

“It’s a shame to name a non-Muslim and make a mockery of it,” said Zeki Yaylaci. “We consider it an insult to Muslims, the mosque community, and mosques themselves.”

Another worshipper highlighted the mosque’s history, stating, “On the internet, it says the mosque is in Victor Osimhen’s name, but this has been the Bulut Mosque for over 10 years.

Everyone knows it as such.” The congregant also questioned the connection, noting that Osimhen has no affiliation with the mosque or the city of Konya. The Super Eagles forward is reportedly unaware of the incident.

From Lions to Mosques: The many tributes to Osimhen

This isn’t the first time Osimhen’s name has been used in an unusual tribute. According to the Daily Sabah, two lion cubs born in June at the Berkem Aslan Diyarı zoo in Antalya were named after Osimhen and his former teammate’s son, Ciro.

The lion cubs, initially named Simba and Nala, were renamed after Galatasaray fans celebrated their championship victory at the zoo, making them the new mascots.
