Over 20 donkeys have been found slaughtered in an illegal operation uncovered during a late-night security crackdown in Kamboo Sub-location, Makindu, Makueni County.
The operation, carried out at around 12:30 AM today (April 7, 2024), followed intelligence reports received by Senior Chief Jackson Kimende of Makindu Location and the Assistant Chief of Kamboo.
Upon arrival at a forest within the area, authorities discovered the already slaughtered animals, while several suspects fled the scene moments before officers arrived. Two suspects were arrested at the site.
The senior chief immediately alerted Makindu Police Station, prompting a swift response by the Ward Commanding Officer. Officers intercepted a vehicle believed to have been transporting the illegal meat while it was being loaded.
The driver, however, managed to escape and the vehicle was found with its rear number plate removed, raising suspicion of an attempt to conceal its identity.
Security officers are still at the scene awaiting detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who are expected to document and process evidence as investigations continue.
Authorities say more arrests are likely as the search for the escaped suspects intensifies.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as the crackdown on illegal slaughtering operations continues.
