Babu Owino secures release of 200 inmates on first day as Advocate

In a bold and symbolic gesture on his first day as an Advocate of the High Court, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino secured the release of over 200 inmates from Nairobi West Prison — a move that has sent ripples across Kenya’s legal and political landscape.

The fiery legislator, freshly admitted to the Bar on May 23 alongside 608 other lawyers at the Supreme Court, wasted no time in turning his new legal credentials into action. In a statement issued Saturday, May 24, Owino described his prison visit and legal intervention as a “fulfilling” act of justice and public service.

“Yesterday, I released my brothers and sisters from prisons,” Owino declared. “Nothing can be more fulfilling to my soul than to deploy all my skills and capacities in the service of my fellow citizens.”

According to Owino, the majority of those released were held for petty offences such as traffic violations, public intoxication, and consuming illicit brews — unable to post bail, pay fines, or meet bond conditions.

“Through my professional representation as an advocate, I secured the release of more than 200 persons,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to serve beyond the political arena.

Owino’s visit to Nairobi West Prison formed part of a broader outreach that included several correctional facilities across the city. His actions have drawn praise from supporters who see the move as a practical demonstration of servant leadership.

“This achievement is not about personal grandiosity,” he emphasized. “It is about sharpening the tools of service. The law is now a new battlefield where I will fight even harder for justice, equity and the rights of the common mwananchi.”

The MP, known for his outspoken style and populist appeal, has positioned his legal journey not as a career pivot, but as an extension of his long-standing advocacy for social justice.
