Confusion and tension have gripped Chemelil Academy School in Muhoroni Constituency, Kisumu County, as parents accuse Chatthe Group (Kibos Sugar Company) of poor management of the institution.
The uproar comes at the start of the new school term, with allegations that teachers’ salaries have been slashed and some staff dismissed, creating what parents describe as a hostile learning environment.
Speaking after an emergency meeting convened at the school, parents announced plans to take legal action aimed at removing Chatthe Group, Kibos Sugar Company, from its supervisory role.
“We have been sidelined in crucial decisions affecting the school,” said Frederick Mc’Otieno, Chairperson of the Parents’ Association. “This exclusion has directly impacted the welfare and academic progress of our children.”
Parents further expressed dissatisfaction with the way the school has been run, citing lack of stakeholder involvement and unilateral decisions that have undermined the stability of learning.
“Teachers’ salaries have been cut, and some staff dismissed without consultation,” one parent lamented. “This has disrupted the learning environment and lowered morale among both teachers and students.”
In response, Chemelil Sugar Company defended its actions.
“Only one teacher was dismissed, and that decision was made on the recommendation of the school’s board,” explained Jacob Jager, the company’s general manager. “The reduction in salaries was necessary to cut costs, as the company has been burdened with heavy wage bills.”
Despite these assurances, parents remain unconvinced. They accuse the school’s board of failing to act on repeated complaints, allowing the crisis to deepen.
“Our sole intention is to protect the interests of the students and ensure the school is run with transparency and accountability,” stressed another parent during the meeting.
As the first term progresses, the standoff between parents and the sugar company continues to cast a shadow over Chemelil Academy School. Parents insist they will not relent until the management of the school reflects openness, responsibility, and a commitment to the welfare of learners.
