Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has once again stirred the political waters, declaring that Parliament has lost its independence and now functions merely as a “conveyor belt” for the Executive’s agenda.
Babu launched a scathing attack on Kenya’s current leadership over what he says is institutional decay, and misplaced national priorities.
“Parliament has stopped being an independent body. Everything we do, we are just but a conveyor belt for the Executive,” Babu said during an interview with Citizen TV on Friday, September 5. “The Speaker is in bed with the government, the majority are in bed with the government, so what do you expect? Parliament is dead.”
At the heart of the conversation was the rise of the Kenya Moja Movement, a coalition of over 70 MPs who, according to Babu, have had enough of watching Kenyans suffer while corruption thrives unchecked.
“Kenya Moja comes to bring down the towers of oppression and raise the banners of freedom. This is a revolutionary movement. Kenyans are tired, and it’s time we reclaimed what’s been stolen from them,” he said.
When pressed about his absence from the recent ODM–UDA parliamentary group meeting, Babu responded with a touch of sarcasm and defiance:
“I wasn’t consulted during the signing of that agreement. I had other more important things to do, like serving my constituents.”
He was also asked about his future within the ODM Party, especially in light of growing internal divisions:
“That’s tomorrow’s problem,” Babu said. “Today, I’m focused on delivering what I promised my people. I won’t lose the joy of today worrying about tomorrow’s pressure.”
Babu also ridiculed the government’s fertilizer and housing programs, arguing they miss the mark on what Kenyans actually need:
“The last time I heard about fertilizer, the government had packed stones and donkey poop in bags and gave that to farmers. Kenyans are not crying for houses. They’re crying for food, jobs, and school fees. The government’s priorities are upside down.”
He also took issue with the selective fight against corruption, accusing the Executive of shielding allies while targeting critics.
“Anybody who opposes the President is dealt with. But if you’re close to him, you’re safe, even if there’s a file on you. That’s not fighting corruption. That’s protecting it.”
Asked whether he would consider sponsoring a motion to impeach the President, Babu delivered a sarcastic remark:
“I’m not a talented time waster. In this Parliament, that would just be optics. Nothing meaningful can pass while it’s under capture.”
