Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary and leader of the Party of National Unity (PNU), Peter Munya, has launched a blistering attack against the push for a single political party in the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking at the opening of a new PNU office in Imenti Central, Meru County, Munya declared the idea “undemocratic” and a threat to Kenya’s multiparty system, emphasizing the importance of political diversity.
The event, which took place on August 4, 2025, served as a platform for Munya to reassert PNU’s presence and outline its strategy ahead of the 2027 general election.
The PNU leader, who is also vying for the Meru gubernatorial seat in 2027, confirmed the party’s plan to field candidates for all elective positions.
He also revealed that PNU is engaged in discussions with other like-minded parties to forge a formidable alliance and support a joint presidential candidate, with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i being considered a strong contender for the role.
Munya, a former Meru governor, stated that PNU, a party founded by the late President Mwai Kibaki, stands for national unity rather than tribal or religious division.
While Munya did not name the individuals or group behind the push for a single Mt. Kenya party, his remarks are widely seen as a direct challenge to the DCP and its allies, who have been advocating for regional unity under their political banner.
Recent political discussions and movements in the region have seen leaders aligned with DCP push for a consolidation of smaller parties to create a dominant force, a move Munya and others view as an attempt to stifle political competition and independent voices.
Munya’s strategic move to revitalize PNU signals a new political dynamic in the Mt. Kenya region, setting the stage for a contentious political battle leading up to the 2027 elections.
