Police gave an update on the investigation into Cyrus Jirongo’s death

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has launched a probe into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo, on the night of December 13, 2025, along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway in the Karai area.

Initial findings show the crash involved Jirongo’s vehicle (registration KCZ 305U) and a Climax Company Ltd public service vehicle bus (registration KCU 576A).

The head-on collision occurred at approximately 2:19 AM, pushing the deceased’s car roughly 25 meters from the impact point, while the bus stopped about 50 meters away.

The DCI deployed homicide detectives and National Forensic Laboratory experts who examined the scene, conducted preliminary tests, and collected evidence.

Investigators retrieved CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for analysis.

The security footage reveals that at 2:18:40 AM, the deceased entered the petrol station from Nairobi but did not refuel.

He exited at 2:19:10 AM and made a right turn toward Nairobi. At 2:19:25 AM, the CCTV captured the PSV bus colliding with his vehicle.

Police have questioned PSV driver Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who previously gave a statement at Naivasha Traffic Base.

Githinji is currently out on bail pending further investigation into dangerous driving causing death charges. He is expected to report to Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for additional police action.

Detectives have also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom provided their accounts of the incident.

The investigation continues, with the forensic team planning to revisit the scene for additional analysis.

Detectives are tracing Jirongo’s movements before the accident, including taking statements from people he met that night, particularly those at a gathering at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Further examination of the CCTV footage is ongoing, and additional statements will be collected from bus passengers and other witnesses. Once complete, investigators will compile a comprehensive file for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and guidance.

The DCI has extended condolences to Cyrus Jirongo’s family, friends, and relatives, assuring the public of its dedication to conducting thorough, impartial, and credible investigations in accordance with Kenya’s Constitution and the rule of law.
