The National Police Service (NPS) has officially launched a manhunt for suspected militants who carried out a deadly attack in Garissa County early Monday morning.
Under the direct authority of Inspector General Douglas Kanja, a multi-agency security team has been deployed to track down the perpetrators who killed a local administrator and a teacher in the Hulugho area.
In a formal statement issued from Vigilance House on January 26, 2026, NPS Spokesperson Michael Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that the tactical pursuit is being conducted with unwavering resolve.
The security operation follows a night of violence where a local Chief, identified in reports as Chief Owl, and a primary school teacher were targeted and murdered in their homes.
The State’s Response
The NPS leadership has emphasized that the state’s security is fully engaged. “A multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of this cowardly act,” stated Muchiri Nyaga.
“We have secured the area, and our specialized units are currently combing the region to ensure those responsible face the full weight of the law.”
The Inspector General’s office has issued a stern warning against elements destabilizing the region, stating that the National Police Service remains committed to its mandate of protecting life and property.
Enhanced Security Measures
Following the directive from the NPS headquarters, several strategic actions have been implemented:
Border Vigilance: Patrols along the Kenya-Somalia border have been intensified to prevent the infiltration of extremist cells.
Specialized Units: Elements of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the Border Patrol Unit (BPU) are leading the ground intelligence and pursuit efforts.
Public Cooperation: The NPS has called for heightened community vigilance.”The safety of our citizens is our utmost priority.
We urge the public to share any credible information that may assist in the ongoing pursuit.” — National Police Service
