Police launch investigations into suspected mass grave in Kericho

Police in Kericho have launched investigations into a suspected mass grave at Makaburini Public Cemetery following alarming reports from two witnesses.

The two men, aged 23 and 26, who work as grave diggers at the cemetery, recorded statements at Kericho Police Station detailing the incident. They claim that on the morning of March 19, 2026, a vehicle carrying three occupants arrived at the cemetery and held a lengthy discussion with the caretaker, identified as Ezekiel.

According to their account, the same individuals returned the following day at around 6:00 p.m. in a white Toyota Land Cruiser. The men say they were then hired to dig a single large grave, after which approximately 14 bodies, all packed in body bags, were allegedly dumped into it.

Following the report, police officers visited the scene and confirmed the presence of a fresh grave within the cemetery. However, the caretaker is currently missing, and authorities say efforts to trace him are ongoing.

In a statement, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the matter is being treated with urgency, with investigators expected to seek an order to exhume the grave as part of the probe.

The National Police Service has also appealed to members of the public with any information regarding the incident to come forward and record statements to assist with investigations.
