Police officer arrested for losing AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 bullets in Meru

A police officer attached to Kabachi Police Station in Meru County was arrested after reporting that he could not locate his AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 bullets.

This was after the officer was issued the gun on September 1, 2025 for night patrols and was to return it the following day but he failed to do so.

According to the police report, the officer was unable to explain to his bosses how the weapon went missing.

He was arrested and taken to the alleged crime scene before he was locked up as police launched investigations into the matter.

Meanwhile, police expressed optimism in recovering the weapon as they presented the officer in court for custodial orders.

This comes a month after a police officer was arrested after losing his pistol in unclear circumstances in a bar in Kehancha town, Migori county.

The corporal attached to Kuria DCI offices had been to a bar in the area in the company of a female reveller when he realised his pistol with 15 bullets had gone missing.

The woman who was with the officer was arrested shortly after the incident.

A similar incident occurred in June, when a pistol that was stolen from a police officer and had been missing for four days was found abandoned outside the home of a retired officer in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet.
