A tragic incident unfolded at a police post in Ndurumo, near Rumuruti in Laikipia County. During a heated dispute over a woman, a police officer drew his service weapon and shot a 29‑year‑old man at close range, killing him instantly.
The officer, who had left his patrol base while still armed, walked to a nearby shop where the confrontation took place and fired the fatal shot.
After the killing, the officer returned to the police station, where he turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the chest and dying on the spot.
Investigators found the two bodies about 150 metres apart: the victim’s body lay near the shop, while the officer’s body was discovered inside the station compound.
Both bodies were subsequently transferred to the mortuary pending further examination.
Police recovered spent cartridges from both scenes, and forensic teams are analyzing the weapons and the trajectory of the bullets to piece together the sequence of events.
Local authorities have opened a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the double shooting.
The officer’s motive, the nature of the argument, and whether any procedural breaches occurred are all under investigation.
Community leaders in Rumuruti expressed shock and called for a transparent probe to ensure accountability and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident has reignited discussions about the handling of firearms by law‑enforcement personnel and the need for robust mental‑health support and conflict‑resolution training within the police service.
