Police officers on Thursday, July 17 evening intercepted a lorry that was transporting vandalised railway components in Kibini area, Sultan Hamud.
The officers, drawn from the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU), working in partnership with their counterparts at the Sultan Hamud Police Post, acted on a tip-off to intercept the vehicle.
Upon inspecting the lorry, the officers discovered that it was loaded with 61 railway sleepers and 60 rail bars, which authorities suspect were vandalised and stolen from a section of the railway line.
The suspect behind the transportation was taken into custody, while the vehicle was impounded to allow for comprehensive investigations. The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court as police continue to pursue leads related to the incident.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) lauded the officers involved, saying: “The NPS commends the officers for their swift action and reiterates its commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and bringing vandals to justice.”
The operation underscores the police continued vigilance in safeguarding national infrastructure and clamping down on individuals involved in acts of vandalism.
The suspect now risks being slapped with a fine of not more than KSh10 million, or to imprisonment for a term of not more than 10 years, or to both, according to Kenyan laws.
