Police have launched investigations into a reported shooting incident near the home of Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, raising fresh concerns about security and possible political intimidation in the county.
The governor said a single bullet struck the rooftop of a neighbour’s house on Tuesday afternoon in Kibiko, Kabete—barely minutes after he arrived home from a church service. The incident occurred about 40 metres from his residence.
Speaking to reporters, Wamatangi described the episode as alarming and suspicious, suggesting that it may have been intended to send a message.
“I believe this was not a random shot,” he said. “We want the authorities to investigate thoroughly so that the motive and those involved can be known.”
The governor recounted that earlier in the day, while passing through his farm, he encountered unknown individuals allegedly cutting down trees with a power saw. He believes the confrontation may have provoked the later shooting.
Accompanied by several MCAs, Wamatangi denounced what he termed “a strange pattern of intimidation,” insisting he would not be cowed by the incident or any political machinations that might be behind it.
The neighbour whose house was hit said she heard a loud bang around 3:30 p.m. and initially assumed a stone had struck the roof. Upon checking, she discovered a bullet lodged in the corrugated sheet and immediately alerted authorities.
The bullet head has since been handed over to police for ballistic analysis.
Police officers say they are assessing all angles, including claims of political tension. Detectives were expected to revisit the scene for a full reconstruction and analysis of the shooting trajectory.
The incident comes amid rumblings in Kiambu politics, where Wamatangi has accused rivals of using state agencies to frustrate him—allegations he made earlier this year when the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) probed his administration. He labelled the inquiries a “political witch-hunt.”
Separate robbery incident in Turkana
Meanwhile, in Kalokol, Turkana County, a woman was shot and injured during a robbery by a two-man gang armed with AK-47 rifles. The attackers stormed Kalokol Market, shot the woman in the shoulder, and made away with money and valuables from traders.
Police say the victim is in stable condition as officers pursue the criminals. Residents, however, report that similar raids have been on the rise and are urging the government to intensify patrols in the area.
Security agencies say additional personnel have been deployed to curb the escalating incidents.
