Police recover 72 stolen mobile phones at a Mathare residence-cum-repair shop, suspect arrested; complainants identify 32 of the gadgets

A suspect believed to be dealing in stolen electronics has been arrested by officers from Utalii Police Station following a targeted operation on Thursday, July 10 at his residence-cum-repair shop located in Mathare area of Nairobi.

According to the police, the operation was carried out based on intelligence provided by members of the public. During the raid, officers recovered a trove of suspected stolen electronic items including 72 mobile phones, two laptops, a Universal Flashing Interface (UFI), a Pandora device, a camera, two external hard drives, and a CPU.

“Thirty-two of the recovered mobile phones have already been positively identified by complainants from M-KOPA Company,” confirmed the police. “We are now working to trace the owners of the remaining items, which have been secured as exhibits in police custody.”

The suspect, who operated an electronics repair workshop within his residence, is now in police custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

The National Police Service (NPS) has praised the public for their cooperation in the matter. “This arrest and recovery would not have been possible without the support of the community,” the police said in an official statement. “We commend members of the public for the information that led to this successful operation.”

The NPS also called on citizens to continue working closely with law enforcement to help combat crime. “We encourage Kenyans to keep sharing timely information with the police. Community policing remains a critical pillar in ensuring safety and justice.”

Investigations are ongoing, and members of the public who may have lost electronic devices are urged to visit Utalii Police Station to assist with identification.
