Police reservist shoots ex-wife before ending his own life in Lamu

A member of the National Police Reserve (NPR) shot his former wife, killing her instantly before turning the gun on himself in Kiunga, Lamu County.

According to the police report, the two had divorced.

An eyewitness told police that a female relative who was in the house during the incident on June 16, 2025, was also shot and injured.

The incident was confirmed by Lamu East Deputy Commissioner George Kubai, who explained that police responded to gunshots at the home of the NPR officer identified as Shaffie Swaleh Bwana, 29, and rushed there only to find his body lying in a pool of blood.

Police recovered the murder weapon, an AK47 rifle which had 23 bullets and an extra magazine with 30 bullets at the scene.

His body was found with a gunshot wound to the throat. Bodies of the two victims were moved to hospital as police continue with investigations.

Meanwhile, the body of his former wife, identified as Najma Athman, 40, was found lying in the house with bullet wounds to the cheek and stomach.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deaths could be linked to trauma, which is common among many members of the community.

Like the police and other members of the disciplined services, NPR officers are exposed to issues that leave them traumatized.

However, police say the government has rolled out a training program on mental health, targeting police officers and NPR.
