Police seize 100Kgs of bhang in Kakamega

Officers from Matungu Police Station in Kakamega County flagged down a private vehicle at a roadblock on September 14, 2025 at night.

However, instead of complying with the officers’ directive, the driver defied the order, accelerated away, and drove over the spikes that had been set up across the road.

In response, the officers immediately initiated a high-speed pursuit towards the Mayoni area, along the Bungoma – Mumias road.

Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered a consignment of what was later confirmed to be Cannabis sativa (bhang), weighing approximately 100 kilograms.

“The narcotics were seized and have since been secured as exhibits at Matungu Police Station,” police reported.

Of the two occupants of the vehicle, one was apprehended at the scene and is currently in police custody, while the other managed to flee and remains at large as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service commended the officers for their dedication to duty and reaffirmed its commitment to serving and protecting the public.

A similar incident happened in Matungu on August 27, 2025 when a suspect fled on foot after abandoning a motorcycle loaded with bhang during a security operation.

According to the national police service, officers from Matungu police station mounted a roadblock after receiving intelligence from their counterparts at Kayonzo police station about an individual allegedly ferrying bhang on a motorcycle.

When the suspect approached the checkpoint, officers signaled him to stop. However, he defied the order, riding over a spike barrier that punctured his front tire.

The motorcycle came to a halt a short distance from the roadblock, prompting the suspect to abandon it and escape into nearby fields.

Upon inspecting the motorcycle, police discovered it was carrying 25 kilograms of cannabis sativa.

Elsewhere at Soko Mjinga along the Nairobi- Nakuru highway, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two suspects and recovered 8 sacks of bhang on September 10, 2025.

This was after police officers intercepted a black Nissan X-Trail, registration number KDN 051S, along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway at Soko Mjinga.

“The vehicle was escorted to Magumu Police Station where, upon a thorough search, officers recovered multiple sacks of the suspected narcotics. The two suspects are in custody awaiting further police action,” DCI reported.
