A well-coordinated operation by Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives in Mombasa has led to a significant seizure of 2,400Kg of bhang (cannabis sativa) with an estimated street value of KSh72 million. Six drug traffickers were arrested during the meticulously executed operation.
Acting swiftly on intelligence, detectives successfully intercepted the narcotics before they could be distributed across Mombasa and its surrounding areas.
The operation began with the interception of a heavy goods vehicle, a truck with registration number KDT 659G, along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway. An inspection revealed 50 sacks hidden inside the truck, all stuffed with long rolls of bhang wrapped in khaki paper, weighing a total of 2,400kg.
The driver, Nolden Ogola Misieba, and his co-driver, Andrew Kaida, were immediately arrested at the scene.
Hot on the heels of the initial intercept, detectives successfully traced three additional vehicles believed to be integral to the final stage of the drug delivery chain: KCL 458S (Toyota Noah), KCZ 567R (Nissan Note), and KDQ 867K (Toyota Vitz).
Subsequent investigations revealed that these three smaller vehicles were meant to be loaded with the consignment for rapid distribution across Mombasa and its environs.
The drivers and their accomplice, Jefferson Kamau, Lawrence Onyango, John Lutomia, and Samuel Juma Okoth, were all apprehended.
All six suspects are currently in custody and undergoing processing by the police. The seized narcotics and the four vehicles have been detained as key exhibits in the ongoing investigation.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) remains firm in its commitment to fighting drug trafficking. In a statement on the operation, the DCI made it clear that this was a vital strike against criminal networks:
“A well-coordinated operation led by Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives in Mombasa has resulted in the arrest of six traffickers along with the seizure of bhang valued at approximately Sh72 million.”
The DCI further underscored the importance of community partnership in achieving these results.
“The DCI remains steadfast in the war against drug trafficking…”
They also specifically acknowledged the role of the public in ensuring the operation’s success.
“…and salutes vigilant members of the public whose timely tip-offs keep our communities safer.”
