Pope Leo XIV to embark on historic first pastoral tour of Africa

Pope Leo XIV is set to begin a 10-day pastoral tour of four African nations on April 13, 2026, marking his first official visit to the continent since ascending to the papacy.

The Holy Father will travel to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea in a trip widely viewed as a significant moment for the Catholic Church in Africa.

Notably, the visit will include the first-ever papal trip to Algeria, a nation with a predominantly Muslim population.

The move is expected to strengthen interfaith dialogue and reaffirm the Church’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding among different religious communities.

The African tour comes less than a year after Pope Leo XIV was elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

Born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, he was chosen on May 8, 2025, on the second day of the conclave following the death of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

His election marked several historic firsts: he is the first pope born in the United States, the first to hold U.S. and Peruvian citizenship, and the first member of the Order of Saint Augustine to lead the global Catholic Church.

He also becomes the second pontiff from the Americas after Pope Francis.

Observers say the upcoming visit signals Pope Leo XIV’s intention to strengthen ties with the fast-growing Catholic population in Africa while addressing key social and spiritual issues affecting the continent.

Africa remains one of the most vibrant regions for Catholicism, with millions of faithful and a rapidly expanding youth population.

The visit also evokes memories of Pope Francis’ landmark trip to Kenya in November 2015, his first journey to Africa as pontiff.

During his three-day stay, Pope Francis celebrated a public mass at the University of Nairobi, visited the informal settlement of Kangemi, met thousands of young people at Kasarani Stadium, and spoke candidly about poverty, corruption, inequality, and environmental conservation.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, after suffering a stroke, bringing to a close a transformative papacy that emphasized humility, social justice, and outreach to the marginalized.

As Pope Leo XIV prepares to step onto African soil for the first time as pontiff, many faithful across the continent are anticipating messages of unity, hope, and renewal, themes that are expected to define his pastoral mission and shape his relationship with Africa in the years ahead.
