The Vatican is preparing for a momentous occasion on Sunday, May 18, as Pope Leo XIV, formerly American Cardinal Robert Prevost, will be officially inaugurated as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church in a solemn ceremony at St. Peter’s Square.
The Papal Inauguration Mass, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Rome time, will mark the formal beginning of Leo XIV’s papacy and is expected to draw tens of thousands of worshippers, dignitaries and faithful from around the world. It will be the first papal inauguration since the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, April 21.
“This ceremony not only celebrates a new chapter in the Church’s history, but also serves as a global symbol of unity, faith and leadership,” the Holy See Press Office stated in a release.
As is tradition, Pope Leo XIV will be presented with two powerful symbols of papal authority—the pallium and the Ring of the Fisherman.
The pallium, a white woolen band embroidered with six black crosses, will be draped over the Pope’s shoulders by the Cardinal Protodeacon. It represents the Pope’s role as the spiritual shepherd of the Church and his unity with bishops across the world.
Following this, the Cardinal Camerlengo will bestow upon him the Ring of the Fisherman, which bears the image of St. Peter casting his net. Cast anew for each papacy, the ring is not merely ceremonial—it is used to seal official papal documents. In a tradition steeped in centuries of symbolism, the ring of a deceased or resigned pope is destroyed to mark the end of that pontificate.
“The pallium and the ring are not just vestments—they are declarations of purpose, service and continuity,” said Father Marco Santini, a Vatican liturgical scholar. “With these, the Church affirms that the Pope does not stand alone, but in the lineage of Peter.”
The inaugural mass will feature a solemn procession into St. Peter’s Square, attended by cardinals, bishops, and clergy from around the globe. In a show of obedience and unity, a representative group of cardinals will kneel before Pope Leo XIV to pledge their loyalty.
Unlike the weekly Sunday Mass, which typically lasts just over an hour, the Papal Inauguration Mass will stretch between two to three hours, filled with prayer, music and liturgical rites. Pope Leo XIV is expected to deliver a homily outlining his spiritual vision—a tradition that often gives early insight into a new pontiff’s priorities.
Observers are eager to see what themes will define the first American Pope’s message. Pope Francis, during his 2013 inauguration, underscored humility, social justice and care for creation—values he embodied throughout his decade-long tenure.
Pope Leo XIV’s election on May 8, following a conclave of 133 cardinals, marks a historic moment for the Church. He is the first American-born pontiff to ascend to the papacy, a development that has stirred global curiosity and renewed interest in the Church’s evolving leadership.
As Rome prepares for the influx of pilgrims and dignitaries, the world watches in anticipation. A new chapter in Catholic history is about to unfold—rooted in tradition, yet bearing the mark of history in the making.
