A road accident involving a popular Ohangla artiste left one person dead Friday evening along the Katito–Kendu Bay road, Kisumu County, in an incident that has cast a shadow over the festive mood in the region.
According to a police report filed at Katito Police Station under OB No. 26/26/12/2025 and 1AR 23/2025, the accident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. at Harambee area and was reported half an hour later.
The report indicates that Javan Onyango Otieno, a well-known Ohangla performer, was driving a Subaru Outback, registration number KBP 504M, from Kendu Bay direction towards Katito when he attempted to overtake several vehicles.
In the process, his car collided head-on with an oncoming motorcycle, registration number KMEC 570E, a TVS Star, ridden by John Chibole Muyirikha, aged about 60 years.
“It so happened that one Javan Onyango Otieno was driving motor vehicle registration number KBP 504M… and on reaching the location of the accident, he overtook a fleet of motor vehicles and in the process collided head-on with an oncoming motorcycle,” read part of the police report.
Police said the impact was severe, leaving the motorcyclist with fatal head and leg injuries. He died on the spot.
The report further notes that the deceased did not have a helmet or reflective jacket at the time of the crash.
The body has been moved to Nyakach Sub-County Hospital Mortuary in Kisumu County awaiting postmortem examination.
Both the Subaru and the motorcycle were towed to Katito Police Station yard for inspection as investigations continue.
Officers have classified the incident under Cause Code No. 10 – Used Case, suggesting dangerous overtaking as the likely cause of the fatal collision.
Police have cautioned motorists to observe road safety rules during the festive season, noting an increase in traffic-related fatalities across the region.
