President Ruto announces plans to construct Thika-Museum Hill expressway to ease traffic

President William Ruto has announced a major infrastructure project aimed at decongesting one of Nairobi’s busiest roads. During the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, December 12, the President unveiled plans for a new expressway from Thika to Museum Hill.

Speaking to the public, President Ruto said: “Barabara ya Thika Road imejaa na kuna msongamano mkubwa sana wa magari katika barabara yetu ya Thika. Kwanzia mwaka ujao vile tuko na Expressway kutoka JKIA, pia tutajenga Expressway kutoka Thika mpaka ifike hapa Museum hill ili tuondoe jam.”

The project is expected to significantly reduce the notorious traffic jams that have long plagued commuters traveling between Thika and Nairobi’s central business district. He indicated that the expressway will feature multiple lanes in both directions, modern interchanges, and dedicated lanes for public transport to ensure smooth traffic flow.

This expressway will be major boost for Kenya’s transport infrastructure, because easing congestion on Thika Road will also reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs, and improve air quality along the corridor.

The government has not yet disclosed the project’s estimated cost or the timeline for completion, but it is expected to create numerous job opportunities during construction and stimulate economic activity along the route.

This initiative is part of his broader vision to modernize Kenya’s transport networks, enhance connectivity, and improve the quality of life for Nairobi residents and commuters from neighboring counties.
