President William Ruto on Monday October 13, 2025 presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for a major affordable housing project at Konza Technopolis, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to expanding access to decent housing across Kenya.
The ceremony took place at Konza Technopolis, a flagship smart city project located in Makueni County. Ruto laid the foundation stone for the new housing development, which is part of the government’s broader Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
The project aims to provide thousands of housing units to low- and-middle-income earners, while also creating jobs and stimulating the local economy.
Konza Technopolis is envisioned as a futuristic tech hub and urban center. Integrating affordable housing into this ecosystem supports: Urban planning goals for inclusive development, workforce accommodation for future tech and service sector employees, and infrastructure cooperation with ongoing smart city investments.
Ruto emphasized that the housing initiative is not just about shelter—it’s about dignity, employment, and economic transformation. He restated his administration’s goal to construct over 200,000 housing units annually nationwide.
The affordable housing programme is a key pillar of the Kenya Kwanza agenda, and as of late 2025, the government reports over 70,000 units at various stages of construction nationwide.
The event also saw the launch of key strategic projects aimed at boosting innovation, job creation, and infrastructure development within the smart city.
