To avoid confusion that has marred the Kenya Junior Secondary School Assessment (KJSEA) results, Education Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Bitok has called on the teachers to continue explaining to the parents and learners how they performed in the three pathways.
Speaking in Mt Elgon, Bungoma on Saturday said that in terms of the Competency based curriculum grades students differently from the traditional, Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
“Under CBC there are three major qualitative grades, we have Exceeding Expectation (EE), Meeting Expectation (ME), Approaching Expectation (AE) and Below Expectation (BE),” PS Bitok stated.
He added that in each of the four pathways, it is split into two: EE1, EE2, ME1, ME2, AE1, AE2, BE1 and BE2 with respective points starting with 8 to 1.
“We have heard some parents complaining that why is it that their children have scored EE, the EE we are talking about here is not like the ‘E’ of KCPE, EE here means Exceeding Expectation actually is the best,” he said.
He added, “Remember, Competency based Education is not about the exam or assessment it is about the competency of the child, is about what the child can do best or what he/she knows,”
Further, Bitok encouraged parents to look at the cluster in the three pathways; there is a cluster for stem, social science and arts and sports.
“These clusters are a guideline to help your child to understand which pathway a child is going to pursue, the government is expecting a 100 percent transition,” he said.
He notes that the KJSEA assessments meant parents understand which their learners are strong in.
The PS affirmed by 20th this month all learners would have been placed in their various senior schools.
“By 20th this month all KJSEA learners should have known the senior school they would have been placed in,” he said, adding that an opportunity will be given to digitally revise the schools that they would have been placed in if they don’t like them.
Bitok said that the senior schools are ready to receive learners, noting that the retooling of teachers was already done.
“We are anticipating that by 12th of January 2026, all the senior school students will report to school, our schools are ready, the labs have been prepared, we have a capacity of 1.5 million spaces against 1.13 million,” he affirmed.
