PSG strike twice to down Liverpool in Champions League quarter-final first leg

Paris Saint-Germain took a decisive step toward the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League with a commanding 2-0 victory over Liverpool in their quarter-final first leg clash on Wednesday night.

Goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sealed a dominant performance in Paris, as the hosts finally found the clinical edge that had eluded them in a similar fixture last season.

Doué set the tone early, breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute with a looping effort from just inside the box. The strike, which took a deflection off Ryan Gravenberch, left goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili stranded as it dipped into the net.

Despite falling behind, Liverpool remained in the contest largely thanks to Mamardashvili, who produced a string of impressive saves.

The Georgian shot-stopper denied Kvaratskhelia with a full-stretch stop before using his legs to keep out Doué’s close-range attempt after a clever setup by Ousmane Dembélé.

Liverpool threatened sporadically, with Florian Wirtz orchestrating one of their best moves, but the visitors struggled to match PSG’s intensity and attacking fluidity.

After the break, the hosts continued to press, and their persistence paid off in the 65th minute. Kvaratskhelia latched onto a precise through ball from João Neves, cut inside under pressure, and calmly slotted past Mamardashvili to double the advantage.

PSG could have extended their lead further, with Dembélé striking the post late on and Achraf Hakimi forcing another save, but the two-goal cushion already puts them firmly in control ahead of the return leg at Anfield.

The result also served as redemption for Luis Enrique’s side, who had suffered a narrow home defeat to Liverpool at the same stage last season despite dominating proceedings.

Speaking after the match, Luis Enrique praised his team’s performance but admitted they could have scored more, while Kvaratskhelia named Player of the Match urged caution ahead of the trip to England.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot acknowledged his side were fortunate to only concede twice, but remained optimistic about overturning the deficit at Anfield, a venue renowned for dramatic European comebacks.

The tie remains finely poised, but with their current form and attacking depth, PSG will travel to Merseyside with confidence as they look to finish the job and book a place in the semi-finals.
