Raila calls for a ‘conclave’ of intergenerational dialogue amidst rising political tensions

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has made a fervent call for a national reconciliation forum, urging all key stakeholders including the political class, the clergy, and the youth, to converge and deliberate on critical issues aimed at de-escalating the country’s current socio-political crisis.

Addressing the press on Monday, July 7, the veteran opposition leader articulated his vision for unity. “As a living architect of the events leading to Saba Saba, I choose a coming together of minds and country in the interest of the country I long fought for its progress, stability and prosperity,” Raila stated, emphasizing his commitment to Kenya’s future.

Odinga had been widely expected to address a rally at Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi yesterday, in commemoration of the historic Saba Saba day, but was conspicuously absent.

He attributed his no-show to numerous roadblocks strategically mounted across major city roads, which he claimed made it impossible to reach the venue.

Raila’s unexpected call for dialogue, however, has immediately raised pertinent questions regarding the potential agenda of such a forum and the definitive list of participants to be involved in these crucial conversations.

Reflecting on 35 years since the inaugural Saba Saba, the former Prime Minister painted a stark picture of the nation’s current predicament.

He asserted that Kenya is presently at a crossroads and the only viable path to avert a national crisis is through collective reasoning among all stakeholders.

“What is to be done? I propose an inclusive intergenerational national conclave to hear our people across all divides and come up with irreducible reforms and changes necessary to take the country forward,” Odinga proposed, hinting at deep-seated issues requiring urgent attention.

Among the key areas Odinga believes require immediate intervention, he highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive police reforms.

According to the ODM leader, such reforms must primarily focus on enhancing accountability, fostering greater transparency within the force, and significantly improving police-to-people relations to build public trust and ensure justice.

The call for dialogue comes amidst heightened political temperatures and public demonstrations, underscoring the urgency of a unified approach to address national challenges.
