Odinga’s connection to sports was profound and varied he served as the patron of Gor Mahia until his demise, he was an unwavering supporter of the Harambee Stars (Kenya’s national football team), often gracing the terraces to rally behind the team, his support extended to rugby, where he was a “familiar and supportive figure,” cheering the national teams with “genuine passion”.
Personal athletics connection and vision
Odinga’s admiration for athletics ran deep. He even recalled his own days as an athlete during the 2018 Inter-County Games at Gusii Stadium, having competed in the 400 metres hurdles and the triple jump.
As Prime Minister, he demonstrated a bold vision for Kenyan sport by announcing a historic bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
