Raila Odinga Stadium to host the 2025 Madaraka Day after major upgrade

The Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County is set to host the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1st, with the upgraded facility scheduled for handover next week after five months of extensive renovations.

This milestone fulfills President William Ruto’s commitment to transform the stadium into a modern 12,000-seater venue capable of hosting major national events.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, who led recent inspection tours alongside Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, confirmed that the stadium’s renovation is nearing completion.

Key works include the construction of new spectator terraces, installation of a full-circle canopy, and rehabilitation of the pavilion. The project has expanded the stadium’s capacity from its previous 5,000 seats to over 10,000, with plans to reach 12,000 seats to meet international standards.

The stadium’s upgrade is part of a broader government initiative to improve sports infrastructure ahead of upcoming continental tournaments such as the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

The facility is expected to serve as a vital hub for sports and talent development in the region, as well as a venue for social and cultural events.

Governor Gladys Wanga praised the government’s investment in Homa Bay, emphasizing the stadium’s potential to boost local economic activity through sports tourism and large-scale events.

The government is also improving related infrastructure, including roads within Homa Bay town and the Kabunde airstrip, to accommodate increased visitor traffic.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya highlighted the government’s commitment to completing the project to the highest standards and urged contractors to engage local labor to maximize community benefits.

The stadium’s readiness ahead of Madaraka Day celebrations symbolizes the spirit of unity and shared prosperity championed by President Ruto and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Following the national celebrations, the Raila Odinga Stadium will continue to host local and international sporting competitions, fostering grassroots talent and contributing to Kenya’s growing reputation as a regional sports destination.
