The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has urged Kenyans to remain peaceful during saba saba demonstrations on Monday July 7, 2025.
In a statement on Sunday July 6, 2025, Raila noted that the spirit of Saba Saba day has in the recent years been misinterpreted and misused by people who want to achieve their own agendas.
According to Raila, the main agenda of Saba Saba on July 7, 1990 was to have a peaceful engagement at the historic Kamkunji grounds to discuss and seek opinions from the people on whether Kenya should be a multiparty or continue being a single party state.
He explained that, at that time, they presented a memorandum to the government on the wishes of the people.
The ODM leader emphasized that organizers of Saba Saba activities should do it in the spirit of the 1990 liberators by converging in one place, remember those who were killed and address a rally then retreat to their homes.
“My idea is to call the people and go to Kamukunji, the first place where Saba Saba took place. I will be attending the Saba Saba at Kamukunji to remember those who were killed,” said Raila.
He announced that the symbolic return to Kamukunji was intended to honour those who died during the first Saba Saba protests 35 years ago.
