Ramula Trading Center deserted after deadly anti-mining protests

Ramula trading center in Gem Yala sub-county remained deserted on Tuesday April 7, 2026 following a heavy police deployment after violent anti-mining protests left two people dead.

Security forces from the regular police and the General Service Unit took control of the area after demonstrators stormed Ramula Police Post on Monday, destroying property and setting a tractor ablaze.

Authorities reported that 47 police officers were injured during the clashes, with several hospitalized. Officers responded with live fire, killing two protesters instantly.

The unrest extended into the night, with five houses belonging to residents perceived to support mining activities torched.

Since morning, access to key facilities, including Ramula Health Center, has been blocked, with police trucks stationed throughout the trading center.

Movement into and out of Ramula has been halted, with the Akala–Ramula–Luanda road completely closed.

Officials confirmed the incidents and said security forces will remain on high alert until calm is restored.
