Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has resurfaced after days of concern over his whereabouts, explaining that he went into hiding after suspecting he was being followed by the police.
Speaking during a press briefing at his Karen residence in Nairobi on March 23, 2026, Tuju explained that this was not the first time he had been trailed.
He had previously noticed a suspicious vehicle following him on Friday, 20th, 2026, and reported the issue at Karen Police Station.
The latest scare occurred on Saturday, 21st, 2026, while he was on his way to a scheduled interview at Ramogi FM.
Tuju noticed a white Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series with no number plates trailing him. The sight of the plate-less vehicle alarmed him, particularly because some weeks earlier, approximately 20 police Land Cruisers had visited his home, several of which also had no number plates.
“I was being followed. It is easy to know when you are being followed: you drive, you slow down, they slow down; you overtake, and they try to overtake,” Tuju said.
He was driving himself at the time and was accompanied by his personal aide, Stephen Mwanga. As they neared the Karen roundabout, the vehicle stayed close.
To evade the followers, Tuju took a sharp turn onto Nandi Road, eventually losing the trailing car. He then abandoned his vehicle at Miotoni Lane in Karen.
Tuju went into hiding within the Karen area, where he says he was hosted by a private family until late Sunday night, the 22nd of 2026, while he figured out his next steps.
He acknowledged that his sudden disappearance caused distress among his family, friends, and Kenyans at large, describing the situation as traumatic.
Tuju also referenced recent incidents in the country, expressing concern over insecurity and noting that such developments contributed to his decision to prioritize his safety.
His lawyer, PLO Lumumba, has since indicated that despite Tuju resurfacing, they will continue to follow up on the matter to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities are yet to issue a detailed statement following Tuju’s reappearance, even as questions remain over the identity of those allegedly trailing him and the use of unmarked vehicles.
The development now shifts the focus from a missing persons case to a broader security concern, with Tuju’s account raising fresh questions about safety, surveillance, and trust in law enforcement.
