US rapper Lil Nas X has been taken into custody in Los Angeles following a confrontation with police, officials have confirmed.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), officers responded to reports early Thursday morning of a man walking along Ventura Boulevard wearing only underwear.
He will stay in jail over the weekend. The incident was reported at around 5:30 a.m. local time (12:30 GMT).
When police arrived, the ‘Old town road’ hitmaker allegedly charged at the officers and was detained on suspicion of battery.
He was later transported to hospital, with authorities indicating he may have suffered a drug overdose. LAPD spokesperson Charles Miller provided the update, while representatives for the artist are yet to comment.
Footage circulating online, published by entertainment outlet TMZ appeared to show the artist dancing in the street dressed in cowboy boots and underwear, calling on strangers to join him in what he described as a party.
The 25-year-old artist, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, has been teasing the release of his upcoming sophomore album ‘Dreamboy’, expected later this year. He has previewed snippets of new material on Instagram, building anticipation among fans.
Lil Nas X first rose to fame in 2019 with ‘Old town road’, which broke records as the longest-running number one single on the Billboard Hot 100, spending 17 weeks at the top.
The track won two Grammy Awards and earned him recognition as the first openly gay artist to receive a Country Music Association award.
Known for pushing boundaries, the rapper has often drawn criticism from conservative groups and sections of the public.
Rather than shy away, Lil Nas X has embraced the controversy, at one point joking that the backlash only served to inspire his creativity and fuel his success.
