Raymond Kahuma’s world record chapati attempt fails

Ugandan digital content creator Raymond Kahuma invested a staggering Ksh 1,190,937 in his ambitious bid to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest chapati but ultimately, the attempt was unsuccessful.

Kahuma, known for his large-scale culinary challenges, aimed to make a chapati weighing 150 kilograms, exceeding the current record held by a chef in India. The sheer cost and complexity of the preparation highlight the dedication required for these global records.

The existing Guinness World Record for the largest chapati stands at 145 kilograms and measures 3 meters in diameter. Kahuma set out to surpass this by five kilograms in weight and 0.5 meters in length.

His team faced an immense logistical challenge, needing to construct custom equipment large enough to handle the sheer size of the dough.

Kahuma’s total expenditure for the project reached Ksh 1,190,937. The budget was dominated by custom construction, labour, and materials required for the giant cooking process.

The preparation was divided into five distinct phases, showing where the Ksh 1.19 million was allocated:

Phase 1 Stove construction which took 1 day and costed ksh 137,470.

Phase 2 Pan Manufacturing that took 6 days and costed ksh 290,470.

phase 3 wood and tools which took 4 days and costed ksh 257,736.

Phase 4 making the Weghing scale which took 2 days and costed ksh 133,600.

Phase 5 Pre preparation which took 4 days and costed ksh 233,403.

And the last phase which was the finals attempt which took a day and costed 138,258, suming the total days and amount 16 days and ksh 1,190,937 respectively.

Despite the massive financial outlay and extensive preparation, the final result was not enough to surpass the 145 kg record, leaving the title firmly in India. Kahuma’s dedication, however, has set a new benchmark for ambitious culinary content creation in Africa.
