Reprieve for widow after house fire in Bondo

A widow in Ogago village, North Sakwa location, Bondo Sub-County, has found relief after her house was rebuilt following a mysterious fire that left her and her children homeless.

Lucy Awino, a middle-aged widow, lost her house and all belongings including food, clothing, and school uniforms when the fire razed her house last Thursday.

Since then, she and her children had been forced to spend nights in the cold.

According to Luo customs, widows are traditionally not permitted to seek shelter in neighbors’ houses, leaving her with few options.

Her plight drew the attention of the area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Mr. Oliver Arika, who stepped in to construct a new house for the family.

The intervention has brought much-needed relief, allowing Awino and her children to resume normal life after days of hardship.

Speaking during the handover, Arika said he remains committed to supporting widows, noting that this was the 62nd house he has built for widows in his ward.

He further highlighted the Siaya County Assembly’s passage of the Widows Protection Bill, now signed into law, which seeks to safeguard the welfare and rights of widows.

He urged fellow leaders, churches, and well-wishers to support widows like Lucy with food, clothing, and school supplies for their children.

Villagers welcomed the MCA’s swift action and praised the effort, saying that Awino would now sleep in a warm place.
