A requiem mass for the slain Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP), Charles Ong’ondo Were, will be held today (Wednesday, May 7) at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi, as the nation continues to reel from the shock of his brutal assassination.
The service is expected to draw top government officials, legislators and parliamentary staff, providing a solemn moment for leaders and citizens alike to honour the fallen MP, who was gunned down in cold blood last week.
“There will be a requiem mass at the Consolata Shrine on Wednesday,” National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed on Tuesday, shortly after leading a parliamentary delegation to view the body at Lee Funeral Home.
Ong’ondo’s life was cut short on April 30 by an unknown assailant along Ngong Road. According to eyewitnesses, the attacker, believed to have been riding a motorcycle, fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that the MP was shot five times in the chest at close range. “This was not random. It was a targeted and premeditated killing,” he stated during a media briefing. He further condemned the murder as a “cowardly act,” calling on the authorities to ensure justice is served swiftly.
Following today’s mass, the late MP’s body will be flown to his constituency in Kasipul on Thursday, May 8, for public viewing. He will be laid to rest the following day, Friday, May 9, at his ancestral home in Kachien Village.
Ong’ondo’s death has ignited outrage and fear across political circles, with many demanding heightened security measures for public servants.
