Residents of Gem decry rising insecurity, call for more police presence

Residents of Gem Constituency in Siaya County have raised alarm over escalating insecurity in the area, citing cases of killings, robberies, and attacks targeting women and business operators.

Speaking in Gem during a peaceful march, Donald Omondi, a resident of Gem, condemned the recent attacks and urged the area Member of Parliament, Elisha Odhiambo, to push the national government to deploy more police officers.

“It is not good to see our sisters and mothers being attacked. We want the government to protect all Kenyans and ensure businessmen can operate safely without fear of attacks,” he said.

The residents pointed to a recent robbery incident at Wagai trading centre where armed criminals targeted Mpesa operators.

They lamented that no official report has been issued by the police since the incident, leaving business owners in fear.

Brian Odhiambo Ouko, another resident, emphasized the need for peace and security.

“We are experiencing a lot of insecurities. People are being attacked and robbed, even our mothers in the markets fear for their lives. We plead with our MP to help us get enough police officers because Gem is a big constituency with few officers,” he said.

John Omondi Woga from East Gem echoed similar sentiments, stressing that women in the area should be protected from attacks.

“We need peace in our area. Provide us with more security officers so that our women are not attacked,” he said.

The residents now want the government to act swiftly to restore peace and assure safety for all, particularly traders who operate until late hours.
